Small Lagoon
El Nido, Palawan, Philippines
Address
El Nido
Palawan, Philippines
Description
Small Lagoon is a sheltered turquoise lagoon hidden among the towering limestone cliffs of Miniloc Island. Smaller and more enclosed than nearby Big Lagoon, it features calm waters, narrow passages, and dramatic karst formations that are best explored by kayak. The inner lagoon is reached through a narrow opening in the limestone, creating a more intimate paddling experience.
Access to Small Lagoon is regulated to help protect its sensitive environment. Visitor capacity is controlled, and motorized tour boats are restricted from anchoring directly at the lagoon entrance. Current El Nido Tourism information treats Small Lagoon as a premium lagoon destination, with access arranged through authorized island-hopping tours.
Best Time to Visit
November to May generally offers the most favorable conditions for visiting El Nido, when calmer seas and clearer weather are more common. From June to October, stronger winds and rougher seas can affect boat and lagoon activities.
Daily weather and maritime conditions remain important, and tours may be modified or suspended when conditions are unsafe. Recent El Nido Tourism advisories continue to apply these safety restrictions when necessary.
What to Expect
Expect a kayaking-focused lagoon experience surrounded by steep limestone walls and clear blue-green water. Visitors normally transfer from their tour boat to a kayak before exploring the lagoon.
Because Small Lagoon has controlled visitor capacity, access may require advance arrangements or a reserved slot. Kayak rental may also be charged separately depending on the tour package.
Bring swimwear, sun protection, secure water footwear, and a waterproof pouch or dry bag for valuables.
Getting There
Small Lagoon is reached by boat from El Nido to Miniloc Island, followed by kayak or swimming where permitted. Current tourism arrangements offer Small Lagoon through a premium lagoon tour option, and local rules manage visits separately from Big Lagoon to reduce pressure on these popular sites.
Responsible Travel
Small Lagoon lies within El Nido’s protected marine landscape. Avoid touching or standing on coral, climbing or damaging limestone formations, collecting marine life, or leaving waste behind.
Respect carrying-capacity limits, designated kayak routes, and instructions from guides and protected-area personnel. These measures help reduce the environmental impact of tourism on the lagoon.
