Snake Island

El Nido, Palawan, Philippines

Address

El Nido

Palawan, Philippines

Description

Snake Island, also known as Vigan Island, is one of El Nido’s most distinctive natural attractions. Its main feature is a long, curving S-shaped sandbar that becomes most visible during low tide, creating a natural pathway through the shallow turquoise waters.

Despite its name, the island is not known for snakes—the name refers to the winding shape of its sandbar. Visitors can walk along the exposed sand, enjoy the surrounding shallow waters, and take in panoramic views of the islands and limestone landscapes of Bacuit Bay.

Snake Island is a regular stop on El Nido Tour B, which focuses on caves, islands, beaches, and unusual coastal formations.

Best Time to Visit

The generally preferred period for visiting is November to May, when calmer seas and clearer weather are more common in El Nido.

For the best Snake Island experience, low tide is especially important, as this is when the famous sandbar becomes most exposed and easier to walk along. At higher tide, part or all of the sandbar may be covered by shallow water.

What to Expect

Snake Island is primarily a scenic sandbar and coastal destination rather than a developed beach resort. Expect shallow water, open sun, and limited facilities.

Visitors commonly walk along the sandbar, swim in the surrounding water, and enjoy the elevated views of the coastline. Because it is a popular Tour B stop, other tour groups may be present during busy periods.

Bring sun protection, swimwear, drinking water, and a waterproof pouch or dry bag for valuables.

Getting There

Snake Island is reached by boat from El Nido and is normally visited as part of Tour B. Current El Nido Tourism advisories continue to include Snake Island among Tour B destinations.

Island-hopping itineraries remain subject to weather, sea conditions, and maritime safety advisories, so individual stops may change on the day of travel.

Responsible Travel

Keep the sandbar and surrounding waters clean by taking all waste with you. Avoid collecting shells, coral, or marine life, and do not step on living coral in shallow areas.

Follow your guide’s instructions and respect any temporary access or safety restrictions.
