Description

Overview

Starfish Sandbar, locally known as Luli Sandbar, is a shallow sandbar located off the coast of Barangay Port Barton in the Municipality of San Vicente, Palawan. The name "Luli" is derived from the Filipino words lulubog (to sink) and lilitaw (to emerge), referring to the sandbar's changing appearance as the tide rises and falls. During low tide, portions of the sandbar become exposed, while at high tide they are largely submerged.

The sandbar is well known for its clear, shallow waters where chocolate chip sea stars (Protoreaster nodosus) are commonly found on the sandy seabed. Because of the abundance of these sea stars, many visitors and local tour operators also refer to the site as Starfish Sandbar or Starfish Island.

Luli Sandbar is one of the regular stops on Port Barton island-hopping tours and is valued for its calm coastal environment and natural marine setting.

What to Expect Tidal Sandbar

The appearance of the sandbar changes throughout the day depending on the tide. Larger areas of white sand are visible during low tide, while high tide covers much of the exposed sand.

Shallow, Clear Waters

The surrounding waters are generally shallow and clear, making it easy to observe the sandy seabed and marine life during favorable weather and sea conditions.

Sea Stars

Chocolate chip sea stars are frequently observed in the area. Visitors are encouraged to observe them in their natural habitat without lifting them from the water, as handling can cause stress and harm to the animals.

Nearby Coral Areas

Coral formations can be found near the sandbar, supporting reef fish and other marine organisms. Visibility varies depending on weather, tides, and sea conditions.

Best Time to Visit

Luli Sandbar can be visited throughout the year, although its appearance depends on the tide.

Low tide provides the best opportunity to see the exposed sandbar and observe sea stars in shallow water. November to May generally offers calmer sea conditions and clearer water for island-hopping activities. June to October is typically wetter, and rough seas or heavy rainfall may affect boat operations and water visibility.
