Matinloc Shrine

Matinloc Shrine is a small Marian shrine set among the limestone cliffs and turquoise waters of Matinloc Island. Built in 1982 in honor of the Virgin Mary, the site adds a cultural and historical element to El Nido’s otherwise nature-focused island-hopping experience.

The shrine and its surrounding structures are no longer an active religious complex in the way they once were, but the site remains known for its distinctive architecture, coastal setting, and elevated viewpoints overlooking the surrounding islands and sea.

Matinloc Shrine continues to be included among the destinations associated with El Nido Tour C, together with beaches and snorkeling locations around Matinloc and Tapiutan islands.

Best Time to Visit

The generally preferred period is November to May, when calmer seas and clearer weather are more common in El Nido. From June to October, stronger winds and rougher seas can result in itinerary changes or tour cancellations.

What to Expect

Expect a relatively short sightseeing stop rather than a full beach experience. Visitors can explore the shrine area and, where access is permitted, climb toward elevated viewpoints for panoramic views of Matinloc Island and the surrounding seascape.

The climb can be steep and rocky, so secure footwear is recommended. Some structures are weathered, and visitors should avoid entering restricted or unsafe areas.

An additional entrance charge may apply for access to the shrine and is not always included in Tour C packages, so travelers should confirm current fees with their tour operator before departure.

Getting There

Matinloc Shrine is reached by boat from El Nido and is commonly visited as part of Tour C. Tour operations and individual stops remain subject to weather, sea conditions, and Philippine Coast Guard or local tourism advisories.
